Our Internal Guidance System

Some of you know that I am completing a book on how to make your life more successful. One of the concepts in the book is that our brains contain many old programs that are no longer beneficial to us. When I talk about goal setting, I use the concept of a GPS navigation device which helps us find our way when we’re traveling. If you do not have an accurate goal in the address box, you will receive no instructions from the device, and all you have is a map of your current position.

Last week, Barb and I were traveling along Interstate 80. Shortly after entering the Ohio toll road, the GPS told us to exit. Based on the goal that I had in mind, I knew that I did not want to exit there, so I ignored the instructions. At the next exit, the GPS again instructed us to leave the toll road. This went on for over 100 miles. Clearly there is something wrong. So I stopped, and looked at the GPS settings, and sure enough, there was a setting to ‘minimize toll roads’. As soon as I changed the setting to ‘maximize freeways’, we were no longer given guidance to exit the toll roads.

This is an excellent example of how old programs can pull us off track and keep us from reaching our goal. Our minds are basically programmed to avoid pain and seek pleasure. We have all experienced past traumas, or “failures”. The memories of these events are constantly being used as guidance. If we do not have a clear goal in mind, we can be easily pulled off target and end up someplace other than our goal. If we do not change that old program, it will constantly be giving us incorrect information. This bad data is called a “mind virus”. All of our minds contain many of these bits of outdated information. The good news is that there are formula type techniques that we can use to remove the mind virus and replace it with a better program that will guide us to successfully reach our goal. I will discuss how to do this at a later time.
