I just had the most amazing experience. A friend of mine, a massage therapist, asked if I would consult on a patient. This patient is an elderly woman who has been diagnosed with a terminal neuromuscular disorder. She suffers tremendously from anxiety. This anxiety comes from fear of choking while swallowing. I was asked to teach this woman some relaxation techniques to help with the anxiety.
When I arrived at her home, I find that she is a small, frail woman. She has a very weak voice, and she was visibly anxious, struggling with thick phlegm in the back of her throat. My training has always been to ask “why?”. Why was she anxious? Why was she so frail? Why did she have phlegm in her throat? Is she really terminal?
Because nutrition is so important, my first approached to any problem these days, is to ask “what are you eating?” Because she has difficulty swallowing, she eats very little and is fed through a tube that has been inserted into her stomach. When I looked at the formula, it was a milk-based formula that is a chemical soup that had no resemblance to real food. I believe that she has milk sensitivity and the formula is creating the thick phlegm.
It was clear to me that she didn’t need relaxation therapy. She needs a different food which will not cause the phlegm. When the phlegm is gone, she will not have as much of the choking sensation and the anxiety will be reduced.
Next, I introduced her to homeopathic Arsenicum. This is natural remedy made from arsenic. When people are poisoned with arsenic, they experience great restlessness and anxiety. As you may know, a homeopathic remedy that is made from something that causes restlessness, will, in a fact, relieve that restlessness. Here is a good example, Syrup of Ipecac causes vomiting, but homeopathic Ipecac will stop nausea and vomiting. Like cures Like.
When I told her that the remedy was made from arsenic, she became very nervous. That was understandable. It also freaked out some of the home health care staff that were present. They did not understand that the homeopathic remedy, which was made by dilution, does not actually contain any arsenic. The patient was a little hesitant, so I applied some of it to the back of her hand instead of spraying it in her mouth like we normally do. Within a short time she was much more calm and relaxed. I have used this remedy, Arsenicum, in numerous terminally ill patients who are suffering from anxiety and fear of loss of breath.
The next question to ask is, “what else can we do to relieve her anxiety?” I suggested a blend of essential oils made by Young Living Essential Oils, called “Valor”. This is an amazing blend of Rosewood, Blue Tansy, Frankincense, Idaho Blue Spruce, and Almond Oil. We use this in situations where people are frustrated and feel hopelessness.
My final question was this “Is she really terminally ill?” It is clear that she had some sort of neuromuscular disorder. It is also clear that she was starving to death. She did not any positive genetic test that would confirm a terminal illness. This is not so unusual, but it gives one hope that this could be something else. I’ve seen several other cases similar to this, which we call “post viral neurasthenia”. In all these cases, the patient has had a severe viral illness such as mono, influenza, or hepatitis. These people have all said, “I never felt well since having that illness”. I’ve also seen this occur after reactions to flu shots in highly sensitive patients. This woman had had a reaction to a flu shot a number of years ago. If this were the underlying cause of her neuromuscular disorder, a simple treatment with homeopathic Gelsemium would totally resolve her symptoms. I have successfully treated numerous patients using this protocol.
My recommendations for this woman were the following: 1. Change the feeding tube formula to a nondairy product made from real food, such as fruit and vegetable juice, pea or rice protein, and some plant oils. (I’m certain that the milk-based formula is creating her phlegm. A two-week trial of a different formula will tell the story). 2. Do not microwave her formula and water. (Microwaving food and water produces changes in molecular structure of the food or water, causing it to become inflammatory.) 3. Use homeopathic Arsenicum, sprayed on the back of the hands or in the mouth, on an as needed basis is a natural solution for the anxiety. 4. Give frequent applications of the essential oil blend, “Valor”, to her feet, wrists, or forehead as needed for hopelessness.
Then something very interesting happened. My friend, the massage therapist, received a very irate phone call from the patient’s daughter. It seems that one of the nurses, fearing that some lunatic was poisoning her patient with arsenic, had called the patient’s daughter. I totally understand the situation. Poor communication and innocent ignorance regarding the use of natural methods caused a great deal of fear in both the nurse and the daughter.
Sadly I left, fearing that this patient may have been misdiagnosed (maybe not, but let’s give her some hope), was suffering from anxiety caused by the sensitivity to her nutritional formula, and was slowly dying of malnutrition.
Unfortunately in healthcare today, as soon as a diagnosis is made, all further questioning and investigation stops. No one asks, “Why?” No one looks beneath the surface to find a cause. Then treatment begins based on the standard of care for that diagnosis. In some cases, the treatment causes more problems. We have forgotten that there are many other ways to deal with illness.
It is really not anyone’s fault. Most doctors and nurses have no training in nutrition and what is safe, healthy food. Someone once said to me, “The toxin in that food is just a tiny amount and it is below the safe allowable limit”. I said to him, “What would you do if I offered you a bowl of great smelling of soup and just before you began to eat, I said to you, ‘I put one drop of urine in that soup, but it is only a tiny amount and it is below the allowable limit’. What would you do? Would you eat that delicious soup?” What would you do? This is happening every day with toxic additives in our food.
The medical profession has a great deal invested in this system and they do an amazing job in emergency and acute care medicine. But traditional medicine is not so good in chronic care and especially nutrition. Change is slow and it will be driven by the people, not the medical industry.
So my advice is, Put Your Health in Your Own Hands. Explore natural approaches and alternative methods of caring for yourself and your family. These methods have been used by humans for many thousands of years. They are valid and may be just what you need.
